Awaiting response from LTTE – SLMM [Tuesday , July 25, 2006 - 9.00 GMT]

The SLMM is currently awaiting a response from the LTTE regarding the Mawilaru anicut closure said SLMM spokesperson Paul Bjerke.

“We have forwarded messages from the Government regarding the water system to the LTTE and are awaiting a response,” Bjerke told PRIU. He further said meetings at a local level were held between the SLMM and the Trincomalee General Officer in Command.

Yesterday the LTTE shut off the sluice gates of the Mawilaru anicut, thereby cutting off the water supply to over 30,000 acres of paddy lands in Seruwila threatening the livelihoods of a large farmer community.

The Government yesterday condemned the closure of the anicut saying it violated the CFA as well as international laws.

Meanwhile the Army reports that farmers and many others affected by LTTE’s act, this morning staged a massive protest at the Kallar junction. According to the Army Irrigation Engineers have confirmed that over 30,000 acres of paddy would be ruined unless the sluice gate is opened immediately.
