Finnish monitors to leave SLMM by Sept. 1 [Friday, July 28, 2006 - 10.30 GMT]

Confirming a BBC story today SLMM spokesperson Omarsson said the 12 Finnish monitors in the SLMM would leave by the September 1st deadline set by the LTTE, due to the lack of security guarantees from the LTTE.

“They are leaving. It is official”, said Omarsson.

The LTTE demanded the withdrawal of monitors from EU countries, when the EU listed the LTTE as a terrorist organization earlier this year. They set a September 1 deadline after initially requesting for immediate withdrawal.
