The Army reports an outbreak in heavy fighting between the security forces and the LTTE this afternoon (31), very close to the Mavil Aru sluice gates in Trincomalee, after troops began to march forward with the aim of opening the anicut. The LTTE closed the anicut that pumps water for over 15, 000 people and 30, 000 acres of land. Brig. Prasad Samarasinghe said "Sri Lankan troops are very close to Mavil Aru and carrying on mortar attacks against the LTTE mortar positions". The Army website reports the death of six soldiers and the injuring of five others due to LTTE mortars and small arms fire. The Security Forces however put the tiger death toll at 30 – 35 at least. Heavy LTTE mine fields and other explosive devices laid by terrorists to stop the advancing troops have delayed the forward march and thereby the opening of the sluice gates.
