Sri Lankan Footwear industry targets European market [Thursday, August 10, 2006 - 9.00 GMT]

Industrial Development Minister Kumara Welgama stated recently that as the minister in charge of the subject he would take quick measures to provide the fullest assistance of the Ministry of Industrial Development and the Government to the new programme forwarded by the local footwear manufacturers to develop the Sri Lankan footwear industry as an industry to win over the European market creating 100,000 employment opportunities.

Minister Welgama expressed these ideas addressing a special meeting held at the Ministry auditorium with the participation of a large number of leading footwear and raw material manufacturers and raw material importers of the island.

Action would be taken to establish 1000 small-scale industries and 50 large-scale industries in the island according to the new development programme of the industrialists, manufacturers and importers engaged in the footwear sector. The new organization of the footwear manufacturers established regarding this have planed to implement several programmes including the manufacturing of footwear according to the latest modern designs, acceleration of the Puttlam leather tanning project and the establishing of a raw materials and large scale footwear showroom and a sales complex.

 

The investors, manufactures and raw material importers who were present at this discussion requested the minister to give his attention to the following facts, namely the imposing of additional taxes for the footwear imported to Sri Lanka, the providing of BOI tax concessions and benefits to the footwear industrialists as well, the provision of financial facilities at low interest rates, the preparation of a special arrangement to minimize expenditure that has to be borne by industrialists in sectors such as electricity and transport, taking in to consideration the climatic conditions of relevant countries in the manufacturing of footwear for exports and the apprehending of stocks of shoes being imported illegally.

They also requested from the minister to take steps to reduce the tax money as presently more money is charged in the importing of raw materials than in the importation of shoes; at the same time also to prevent the harassments caused by customs divisions in clearing imported goods.
