LTTE attack on passenger vessel transporting unarmed troops thwarted [Tuesday, August 1, 2006 - 11.15 GMT]

In an attack similar to that of the Pearl Cruiser II the LTTE this afternoon launched an attack on a transport vessel with 850 unarmed soldiers at the Trincomalee harbour.

“The Navy successfully retaliated. The LTTE failed in its attempt to attack the vessel and so fired a few mortars towards the harbour”, said Lieutenant Commander Rohan of the Sri Lanka Navy.

He said three LTTE boats were destroyed in the attack and denied any destruction of SLN boats. He further said that as of yet there were no reports of any casualties of Sri Lankan troops.

On Thursday, May 11, the LTTE attacked a passenger ferry, the Pear Cruiser II, with 710 unarmed Army, Navy Air force and Police personnel. The ferry carried the flag of the SLMM. The attack was repulsed by the Navy escort vessels.
