Forces in control of Muttur says Lt. Commander Rohan [Wednesday, August 2, 2006 - 7.30 GMT]

The situation in Muttur is under control said Lieutenant Commander Rohan of the Navy speaking to PRIU. “Contrary to reports on certain websites the Forces are in control”, he said.

“Early this morning, about 1.30 am, the LTTE targeting the Muttur jetty in an attempt to capture it have been firing mortars and artillery shelling. The Navy repulsed this attempt. There were six Navy casualties”, he said.

According to the Lt. Commander two soldiers were killed and 14 others injured during the LTTE attack on the Katraparichcan army detachment. The LTTE has also been targeting police posts in Muttur resulting in two police personnel being injured.

“Mortar firing is still happening”, he said.

The Muttur hospital had come under mortar attack, with the Maternity section being targeted, said the Commander, who stressed that these were deliberate attacks. Sixteen civilians including an infant were injured due to this attack, while 10 were dead.

He said unconfirmed reports coming in report of mortar attacks on the Trincomalee and Seru hospitals as well.

“The Air Force had also carried out some aerial bombings earlier”, said Lt. Commander Rohan. He said a report on the current situation had been sent to the President.
