Operation to regain control of Mawilaru anicut still progressing “The Muttur jetty is still under Navy control”, said Lieutenant Commander Rohan of the Navy. He said some civilians were fleeing due to the mortar attacks and shelling. “We sent reinforcements to Muttur earlier today and have not withdrawn from the town centre,” he said. The LTTE at about 1.30 this morning tried to capture the Muttur jetty. Last week the Forces launched a strategic attack on tigers blocking the Mawilaru anicut in a bid to gain control of the anicut and thereby resume the distribution of water to the 15,000 residence of the area. Defence spokesman Kehiliya Rambukwella last week said, “Sri Lanka is an agricultural country, people depend upon agriculture for their very livelihoods. The LTTE preventing the opening of this anicut disrupts not only the drinking water, but their livelihoods as well. We will have 15, 000 refugee families, if their crops are ruined,” he said. Major Rajapaksa of the National Security Centre said the operation to regain control of the anicut was continuing, yet progress was slow as troops were moving in a heavily mined area. He said due to tactical reasons he was not able to disclose the distance of the troops to the anicut.
