“Clearing operations in Muttur are still underway”, Flight Lieutenant Herath told PRIU this morning. The LTTE last morning tried to capture the Muttur jetty and town. The Forces and the Police successful thwarted the attempt. “Overnight, the terrorists managed to get inside and are hiding in homes of residents," the government's chief spokesman, Keheliya Rambukwella, is quoted as telling the Associated Press news agency. "We are in control of the town," he added. The Flight Lt. quoted 50 injured including 10 civilians and seven soldiers killed in action, with one civilian dead as well. He said that troops were still operating towards regaining control of the Mawilaru anicut, forcibly closed by the LTTE almost two weeks ago. Meanwhile in a special communiqué Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake said the obstructing of the water supply to thousands of Sinhala, Tamil and Muslims living in Seruwila was an insult to humanity and human values. He said it was the duty of a responsible Government to clear such obstructions and ensure the water supply which is the civilians’ basic human right. "As our Security Forces are heroically marching towards the Mavilaru anicut, the Tiger terrorists facing defeat were trying to distract their attention to another area, they also made an abortive attempt to destroy a naval craft transporting 850 unarmed soldiers, " said the Prime Minister referring to the current situation in Muttur. He further said the Government categorically stated that it had not started a war. The Prime Minister said the LTTE had now fully displayed its barbarism to the whole world.
