Forces in Muttur engaging in humanitarian efforts [Friday, August 4, 2006 - 11.20 GMT]

The Forces in Muttur are currently engaging in consolidation operations, while engaging in humanitarian efforts by providing civilians with water and medical help, said Major Upali Rajapaksa of the Centre for National Security.

He said the Forces were in the process of moving relief to civilians who had left their homes due to the ongoing tensions in the area.

He further said one soldier had been killed today, with four others injured.

The Air Force had conducted air raids on sea tiger bases this morning between 8 am and 9.30 am.

Major Rajapaksa said troops were progressing towards the Mawilaru anicut, while removing mines from the heavily mined area. He said there was no face to face fighting.

The LTTE yesterday claimed it would handover 40 bodies of soldiers to the Red Cross. The Major said the Army had confirmed that the bodies were not that of soldiers. So far there have been no reports of such handing over of bodies.

Meanwhile, today the Karandeniya police on a tip off arrested two LTTE cadres and their lorry while transporting explosives and weapons for storage for future use. Karandeniya police are conducting further investigations said the Karandeniya OIC.

200 detonators, six hand grenades, 50 kg of C4 explosives, two claymore mines and 30 bombs weighing 5 kg each were seized by the Police.
