Sluice gate to be reopened soon[Tuesday , August 08, 2006- 9.45 GMT]

The Forces soon will reopen the Mawilaru sluice gate. Though progress is being made, it is slow due to a need to completely rid the surrounding areas of any remaining LTTE cadres, for obvious security purposes, say government sources.

On Sunday (6th), the LTTE agreed to open the waterway subject to pre-conditions which included the lifting of all economic embargos on LTTE controlled areas.

Reacting the Government Defence spokesman Keheliya Rambukwella said, “The government is not prepared to accept any conditions on the water supply because it’s a humanitarian issue, water is not a negotiating tool. The operation by the military to free the water blockade will continue.”

According to the Centre for National Security about 2500 – 3000 people have started moving back to Muttur. The figure is supposed to increase with many families now willing to resettle in the area. The Kantale Police has set up an Information Desk to entertain the complaints of those returning.

Meanwhile at Morawewa, Trincomalee this morning tigers fired at SL Air Force troops while on route clearing. One airman died, while three others including a civilian were injured. The injured had been immediately evacuated to the Trincomalee hospital.
