Forces in defensive operation to keep sluice gates open [Thursday, August 10, 2006- 9.00 GMT]

According to the Centre for National Security the LTTE have been firing long range artillery and mortars from 4 am this morning, in an effort to re-capture the Mavilaru waterway now held by the Security Forces. The Tigers have been firing from positions located in Sampoor and Echchalampattu.

The Forces have retaliated in order to ensure that the sluice gates re-opened on Tuesday, remain open, ensuring that water, for drinking and irrigation purposes, continues to be provided to over 15,000 affected families.

Security Forces personnel who suffered injuries due to the latest round of fighting were evacuated to the Kanthalai hospital immediately reports the Army.
