Bay of Bengal Initiative for Mult-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation ninth Ministerial meeting concluded [Friday, August 11, 2006- 8.30 GMT]

A joint statement issued by the Heads of Delegations of the ninth BIMSTEC Ministerial Meeting (August 9, New Delhi) states that it was agreed to enhance cooperation in the areas of Trade and Investment, Transport and Communication, Tourism, Energy Cooperation, Technology, Fisheries, Poverty Alleviation, Culture, Agriculture, Counter-Terrorism and Trans National Crimes, Environment and Disaster Management, Public Health, People to People Contacts, BIMSTEC Website and the BIMSTEC Secretariat.

The 10th BIMSTEC Ministerial Meeting will be held in India next year and will be the 2nd BIMSTEC Summit, which will commemorate the 10th anniversary of the establishment of BIMSTEC and would provide the leaders with an opportunity to assess and review the progress made thus far.

The Heads noted at the conclusion of the meeting that, the founding objectives and principles of BIMSTEC which are to accelerate economic and social growth in the region had progressed successfully.
