The Lakshman Kadirgamar Institute of International Relations and Strategic Studies, (LKIIRSS) was inaugurated by Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake yesterday at 24, Horton Place, Colombo 8. The institute was the brain child of the late Foreign Minister, Lakshman Kadirgamar, who saw the long felt need for a strategic studies institute in Sri Lanka and worked towards establishing one with dedication. The Sri Lanka Institute of International Relations, which was housed in the same premises, now becomes the Lakshman Kadirgamar Institute of International Relations and Strategic Studies with due legislative procedures. The Institute will be directed by a Board, of which the Minister of Foreign Affairs will be the Chairman. The opening of the Institute coincides with Minister Kadirgamar’s first death anniversary which falls tomorrow, August 12. The ground work for establishing a strategic studies institute was completed during his time, but he was not able to witness it actually being set up. After his assassination, as a tribute to him, President Rajapaksa, (then Prime Minister), proposed to the Cabinet that the new Institute of International Relations and Strategic Studies be named after Minister Kadirgamar. The proposal was approved, thus paving the way for the LKIIRSS to be established. At the inauguration, a portrait of the late Minister was unveiled by the Prime Minister in the auditorium of the Institute. A special commemorative stamp was also issued. The gathered observed one minute of silence, in memory of the late Minister.
