LTTE denies permission for wounded to receive treatment in Colombo [Thursday, August 17, 2006 - 9.10 GMT]

The parents of the girls critically wounded by Monday’s Mullathivu aerial bombing have been denied permission by the LTTE leadership to take their children to Colombo hospitals for treatment.

The LTTE has since the bombing changed their story regarding the Mullativu dead initially claiming they were orphans and later stating they were students who had arrived to attend a first aid training programme.

The Military on the other hand as always maintained that this was the LTTE’s Sencholai training camp and that the injured were trainee LTTE cadres, the LTTE being famous for its Baby Brigade. The Military stresses that aerial bombings are carried out on targets that were pre identified and the locations well confirmed via very reliable intelligence sources.

On representations made by Minister Douglas Devananda, President Mahinda Rajapaksa on humanitarian grounds agreed to grant permission for the wounded to receive treatment in the Colombo hospitals. The LTTE apparently sees no reason for the wounded to be brought to Colombo for treatment, despite a Killinochchi doctor recently telling the BBC in an interview that there were no medical facilities available at the hospital.

However, recently the LTTE’s spokesman Daya Master received treatment at Colombo’s Apollo Hospital for a heart ailment.
