Number of returnees decreases after ceasefire [Thursday, August 17, 2006 - 9.15 GMT]

The number of returnees from Lebanon has decreased since the ceasefire came in to place Monday (14) says the Foreign Ministry. “Since the ceasefire most are opting to stay back”, said spokesperson Himalee Arunatilake.

She further said that two Sri Lankans had died due to the war in Lebanon. Last evening 305 Sri Lankans returned to the island while a further 300 are in Beirut and another 500 are in Damascus.

About 80, 000 Sri Lankans are employed in Lebanon, with around 5, 000 returning home since Israel started bombing Lebanon about mid July.
