New bilateral agreement between Sri Lanka and India [Wednesday, August 23, 2006 - 7.00 GMT]

The Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI) and the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) have signed a bilateral cooperation agreement which would benefit export and import activities between the two countries. This is the first time India has signed an agreement of this kind.

As the SLSI Director General reports, the agreement will covers several mutually beneficial areas for both countries related to standardization, quality and certification of products.

According to the agreement both organizations will appoint each other as agents for the purpose of carrying out surveillance, inspections and drawing of samples for independent testing.

The two countries have agreed to organize training programmes on mutually agreed terms in the fields of standardization, quality assurance and testing. They expected to reduce delays in determining quality and approving products when exported and imported between the two countries.
