Trinco fishermen get immediate food assistance [Thursday, August 24, 2006 - 8.00 GMT]

The Government today decided to provide immediately two weeks dry rations to the fishermen in 39 Grama Niladhari divisions of the Trincomalee Town and Four Gravets Divisional Secretariat to meet their urgent food requirements.

The Jathika Saviya programme in association with the World Food Programme will provide these provisions on a request by the Additional Government Agent and Additional District Secretary Mr. W.A.S.B. Amaratunga, on the advice of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The livelihood of these fishermen had been affected by the current skirmishes in the area and the restrictions imposed by the Navy on fishing limits in the sea off Trincomalee. The Government is working towards easing the restrictions on fishing limits in the near future.
