NCPA officer, Bandujeewa Bopitigoda released [Sunday, August 27, 2006 - 8.30 GMT]

Media Centre for National Security reported that, Sub Inspector Bandujeewa Bopitigoda was released yesterday by the LTTE terrorists after being under LTTE custody for over 10 months.

Security Forces confirm that he entered the cleared area through the Omanthai entry point around 10.30 a.m. last morning, Saturday, August 26, 2006.

A pro LTTE website reported that Sub Inspector Bopitigoda was released following a request made by the outgoing Head of SLMM Major General Ulf Henricsson.

Minister Rambukwella however pointed out that the SI had been abducted while he was carrying out his legitimate duties. “He was not participating in combat. He went to arrest a paedophile. He should have been release eleven months ago,” said the Minister.

“The government had been pushing for his release for many months. Nevertheless, we welcome the gesture,” Minister Rambukwella further said, stressing that such an incident should not be repeated by the LTTE if it were serious about peace.
