Another ship load of essential food items to be sent to Jaffna [Monday, August 28, 2006 - 8.30 GMT]

Another ship load of essential food items such as rice, flour dhal, milk powder and infant milk will be sent to Jaffna later this week. The ship is expected to sail either on Wednesday or Thursday.

The first stock of 1600 metric tons of food items sent to Jaffna by sea has been unloaded, according to reports, and the goods have been distributed in the peninsula. Steps have also been taken to send sufficient food stocks continuously to the uncleared areas in Kilinochchi, Mulativu and Vavuniya districts as well.

On the instructions of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, supplies to north and east are being sent by road transport and by ships.

The Information Department quotes the Commissioner of Essential Services, S B Divaratne has saying the latest stock of food items to be sent would fulfill the requirements listed by the Divisional Secretaries of Jaffna, Kilinochchi and Vavuniya.

The Commissioner said that the Joint Operations Command has instructed the entry point at Omanthai in Vavuniya to allow the food lorries to proceed to the uncleared areas. Subsequently 46 lorries carrying food have entered through Omanthai check point. Of the total, 23 lorry loads are for Kilinochchi and 15 for Mulaitivu and eight for Vavuniya.

He added that another ship carrying 900 metric tons of wheat flour will be sent to Jaffna.
