Mother injured while trying to protect son from the LTTE [Monday, August 28, 2006 - 9.00 GMT]

The Media Centre for National Security (MCNS) reports that armed Tigers had stormed the residence of a Tamil civilian in the Wandaramulla area, in an attempt to abduct her son for military training. The mother Somalingam Lechchami was injured when she struggled with the cadres to save her son. She was taken to the Batticaloa hospital for treatment.

The son Somalingam chandrakumaran managed to escape. The Eravur Police are conducting investigations.

Meanwhile a LTTE child soldier (16) surrendered without weapons to the Polwatta Army detachment around 11.00 a.m. yesterday (27). He will be handed over to the authorities.

Two soldiers shot at by LTTE pistol gang

Two soldiers in Vavuniya were shot at by a LTTE pistol gang when they were at a private garage attending to the repairs of an Army vehicle at about 11.45, this morning. One soldier was killed while the other sustained injuries and was admitted to hospital.

In related news early this morning troops on search and clear operations at Selvanagar and Thoppur area were fired at by the LTTE using small arms and mortars.

The troops retaliated promptly with counter mortar fire. The counter attack according the MCNS had caused heavy damages to the Tigers.

Two soldiers are reported dead with twelve others injured.

Gelignite sticks, detonator cords recovered

On a tip-off given by civilians in the Puttalam area, the Police recovered 616 gelignite sticks and five rolls of detonator cords around 3am this morning.

Three suspects have been arrested by the Puttalam Police along with a vehicle. Further investigations are being conducted.
