Combined search operation conducted in Colombo [Monday, August 28, 2006 - 8.45 GMT]

A special combined search operation was conducted in Colombo last afternoon (27) by the Security Forces and Police. Special snap roadblocks were established to check all vehicles including passengers to the Colombo city to ensure the safety and security of both civilians and vital economic installations from probable LTTE attacks.

The check conducted from 3pm – 6pm yesterday subjected civilians of all communities to these security checks, reports the Media Centre for National Security (MCNS).

According to the MCNS though the checks had caused major traffic jams, civilians had cooperated with the Forces and Police as they understood the necessity of conducting such operations in Colombo to protect both civilians and property from Tiger attacks.

During the search operation the Police searched 3189 civilians and 1653 vehicles. 76 personnel were arrested on suspicion and they will be released after investigations.
