Abducted journalist released [Wednesday, August 30, 2006 - 6.45 GMT]

Tamil journalist Nadaraja Guruparan abducted last morning while on his way to work was released very early this morning (30). Guruparan is the news manager of ‘Sooriayan FM radio’.

Inspector General of Police Chandra Fernando told Associated Press that the journalist had been released before dawn and that he was back home. The IGP however declined to give details of the kidnapping as investigations were on going.

Sri Lanka’s Free Media Movement and the U.S.-based International Federation of Journalists condemned yesterday’s abduction as “appalling, the specific targeting of media workers for merely reporting on the conflict”.
