Clearing operations in Sampoor to continue; five LTTE cadres including two teenage child soldiers surrender to ICRC [Thursday, August 31, 2006 - 9.40 GMT]

The Army reports that the ongoing combined search and clear operations of the Security Forces in and around Sampoor area, in close proximity to the Trincomalee harbour will continue until ground troops ensure that the LTTE would not use the area as a launching pad for artillery and mortar attack.

Troops covered an area of 2 km as of Wednesday (30) evening after clearing the areas of booby traps, landmines, claymore mines and other explosive devices.

The ongoing military action is defensive in nature and meant to neutralize LTTE threats to create an atmosphere conducive for resettlement of displaced civilians due to the LTTE offensives.

Meanwhile five LTTE cadres including two teenage child soldiers surrendered to the International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) office in Batticaloa.

The two teenage 15 and 16 years respectively were handed over to their parents by the ICRC.

According to the Army the other three surrendered cadres, 19, 25 and 27 respectively are to be rehabilitated and handed over to their custodians shortly. The surrendered cadres have reportedly told the Forces they were fed up with LTTE violence and their struggle for separatism.

Earlier this month the Government called upon LTTE cadres to surrender after laying down arms.
