Sampur under Army control – President  [Monday , September 04, 2006 - 9.20 GMT]

Sampur has been captured by the Army announced President Mahinda Rajapaksa today, addressing the SLFP’s 55th anniversary.

“Our armed forces have captured Sampur for the welfare and benefit of the people living there,” said the President, who also said the Armed Forces deserved our honour and respect for this task.

The President emphasized there was no war but only the taking of retaliatory action in the face of attacks.

Translation of the statement made in Sinhala by President Mahinda Rajapaksa regarding the successful capture of Sampur by the Armed Services, at the 55th Annual Convention of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, at the BMICH today – Monday, September 4, 2006.

On the one hand the LTTE terrorists are engaged in the most cruel terrorism and violence to divide and separate our country. As a result we are faced with a challenge to the stability of the country’s economy.

On the other hand, there is the challenge of removing the germs of mistrust that have been spread among the Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim people who lived in friendship over the centuries, and build a new Sri Lanka based on mutual trust, love and understanding.

Friends, let us embrace all these challenges.

In facing up to these challenges, at this moment our armed forces have captured Sampur for the welfare and benefit of the people living there.

We offer all honour and respect to the Armed Forces for what they have achieved.

As I always state, what we are engaged in is not a war, but a retaliatory response to attacks carried out on us.
