The LTTE this morning fired continuous artillery shells on the Selvanagar Army camp killing one soldier and injuring four others, the Army reports. According to the Media Centre for National Security (MCNS) the LTTE had recommenced firing mortars at troops moving about the area around 3 this afternoon injuring a further eight soldiers.

"The troops were retaliating successfully, which stopped the attacks. The troops will neutralize the attacks soon”, said a MCNS spokesperson.

Sampur the eastern port city of Trincomalee was brought under the control of the Armed Forces yesterday as a strategic manoeuvre to facilitate the resettlement of the displaced from Muttur and to make the Trincomalee harbour safe, vital for defence and economic purposes.

Meanwhile the Army further announced that the curfew in force in the Vadamarachchi, Walikamam and Islands of Jaffna peninsula were relaxed; only being in force from 6pm to 6am until further notice. The curfew was imposed following the escalation of LTTE violence in the area.
