The government is still committed to peace- Defence Spokesman [Wednesday, September 06, 2006 -8.00 GMT]

The government’s Defence Spokesman Minister Keheliya Rambukwella said that the Government had not gone in to a war despite the defensive operation to neutralize the artillery and mortar attack on Trincomalee launched by the Tiger terrorists from Sampur.

The President has also acknowledged the fact during his recent meeting with Co-chairs of Tokyo donor conference.

In this backdrop a defensive operation was launched to liberate Sampur on 27th August. Since the signing of Ceasefire Agreement in 2002 there was a serious threat to the security of Trincomalee Naval Port, Prima company, Tokyo Cement company and Indian Oil company located closer to Sampur, as the LTTE could launch attack from the area.

The Minister said that the Security forces are in full control over the Sampur area and the resettlement of the internally displaced people will be commenced immediately, once the consolidation of defences were completed.

He also commended the statement made by an LTTE member named S. Pullydewan that the outfit would not pullout from the peace process.

Meanwhile, the military sources said that the LTTE cadres had withdrawn to Verugal area in the face of retaliatory attacks by the Security Forces.
