“It is regrettable that INGO s have given up their mission to assist the civilians affected by the armed conflict when their assistance is most needed. However the government has undertaken the full responsibility of carrying out the humanitarian mission to alleviate the suffering of the civilians, especially the displaced”, said Minister Keheliya Rambukwella, the Defence Spokesman, addressing a press conference held at the Media Centre for National Security, Tuesday (12) morning. “Even after the ICRC yielded to the LTTE pressure and refused the ships to sail under their care, the government decided to give priority to the humanitarian mission, by making all arrangements through the Commissioner of Essential Services”, he added. The Defence Spokesman further said Co-chairs are meeting today in Brussels. It is expected that they will suggest an amendment to 3.5 of the CFA in view of the withdrawal of 03 Nordic countries from the SLMM. There is a misconception that Co-chairs are facilitators. Norway is the facilitator whereas the Co-chairs are the leaders of the Forum of the donor countries formed to grant an aid package to Sri Lanka on the success of the peace process. Referring to Tamil Selvam's statement that the LTTE left Sampur with good intentions he expressed his satisfaction at his magnanimity and requested him to show the same magnanimity in Muhamalai too, so that a solid foundation for peace negotiation building could be built. The Minister said an international forum with eminent persons will be formed to oversee and supervise the investigations into the recent mysterious abductions. Brigadier Prasad Samarasinghe the Military Spokesman briefing on the present military situation in the north and east said that 90% of the displaced families have returned to Muttur. He appealed to the media representatives to encourage the youth to join security forces to protect the motherland. He revealed that before the defensive attack security forces opened a corridor for the civilians, to leave the conflict area. He said in the North, five weeks ago when the LTTE unexpectedly launched a massive attack on security forces in Muhamalai, they retaliated successfully. The forces were able to capture the terrorist bunker line. The Security Forces have now consolidated their positions and inflicted heavy damages to the terrorists.
