Army detachment in Batticaloa comes under mortar fire [Friday, September 15, 2006 -11.45 GMT]

LTTE slays three UNICEF workers in Vavuniya

An Army detachment in Batticaloa came under LTTE mortar fire late Thursday night reports the Army. The LTTE had used 120 mm and 81 mm mortars during the attack. The troops had however shown restraint and not retaliated due to it being a densely populated area.

The terrorists had failed to inflict any damages to the detachment. The SLMM was to be informed.

Meanwhile, the Media Centre for National Security reports that three civilians shot last morning by the LTTE at Mathawathakulam, Vavuniya, were locals working for UNICEF on a contract basis.

Late August, P. Lesly of the United Office Project Firm, a New Zealand Aid Agency working for tsunami affected civilians in Thirukkovil was killed near the Muneimoor lagoon by the LTTE, according to the MCNS.
