Special facilities will be provided by the government for those of the Islamic faith during the forthcoming Ramazan season. Speaking at a discussion held at the Presidential Secretariat yesterday Minister A H M Fowzie said following a request by the President and he, the Government of Saudi Arabia had agreed to provide 100 tons of dates to Sri Lanka for the Ramazan fasting season, despite a shortage of dates this season. He said that the President as the Finance Minister had decided to waive customs and all other duties on these dates. Members of the International Muslim Youth Organization (IMYO) who participated in this discussion said they would make an open appeal to the LTTE to desist from any attacks during the period of the Ramazan fast. Mr. Fowzie also said the Colombo Municipal Council had decided to provide special water facilities, including water tanks wherever necessary, to serve the needs of the Muslim community during this period. Special arrangements had been made to serve the needs of the Muslims, particularly the displaced persons in Puttalam and Muttur, and to increase security in these areas. Steps will also be taken to give special leave for those Muslims who need to carry out religious activities during working hours. Action will be taken by the Government or through the President’s Fund to provide the special “cunjee” and other needs at all mosques to be given when Muslims break fast each day, Minister Fowzie said. Members of the IMYO also thanked President Rajapaksa for the special facilities he had granted to Muslims from the time he was Prime Minister and after he was elected President.
