President Mahinda Rajapaksa currently in New York to attend the 61st UN Summit met with dignitaries and briefed them about the government’s genuine efforts to finding a peaceful solution to the ethnic problem in Sri Lanka. En route to New York President Rajapaksa stopped over in Jamaica where he discussed bilateral and international issues during a meeting with the Jamaican Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller. Immediately after the President Rajapaksa’s arrival in New York Republican Congressman for New Jersey, Mr. Vito Fossella paid a courtesy call. Mr. Fossella expressed his appreciation of the firm commitment shown by Rajapaksa’s government towards peace. He said that while the US did not negotiate with terrorists, he understood Sri Lanka’s approach to resolving the conflict through negotiations. The US Congressman said he was impressed with Sri Lanka’s handling of the rebuilding post-tsunami, while President Rajapaksa expressed his gratitude to the Congressman for the generous support extended to Sri Lanka after the tsunami.
