“Move in the right direction but further clarification needed” says Defence spokesman  [Wednesday, September 27, 2006 -11.30 GMT]

Defence spokesman Minister Keheliya Rambukwella said that many times in the past the LTTE had called for ceasefires whenever it was down militarily and used the time to restore supplies and strengthen itself.

Speaking to PRIU today the Minister said though the LTTE had indicated a willingness to resume talks it was not enough for the government.

“We accept that it is a move in the right direction, but we seek further clarification from Thamilselvam and Prabhakaran. Taking the current situation into consideration their credibility is at stake”, he said.

The Minister during a press briefing in Colombo this morning said that before the summit in Brussels Thamilselvam, the LTTE’s Political Wing Leader had agreed to peace talks without conditions and that after the Summit he had listed out conditions for talks. He said that at the time Thamilselvam was making these promises, the Sri Lankan Navy (Sept 17) had destroyed a ship conveying weapons for the LTTE.
