Bauer is scheduled to travel to Kilinochchi tomorrow to discuss issues pertaining to the resumption of peace talks with the LTTE. According to the Information website Minister de Silva has briefed the facilitator of the government’s stance and expressed hope that the he would be able to convince the LTTE on the importance of the early resumption of talks. Last week Defence spokesman Minister Keheliya Rambukwella told PRIU that the LTTE expressing willingness to talk was a ‘move in the right direction’, but that it was not enough. He said the government needed ‘further assurances’ from the LTTE. In this regard the government has listed three conditions for the resumption of talks. The government has requested a time frame from the LTTE to resume and conclude peace talks and a concrete assurance to the international community and Donor Co-chairs that it will not use sea routes to smuggle in any military hardware. The government has also stressed that the LTTE must not resort to violence during the time of peace talks, thereby compelling the government to retaliate.
