Dhanapala withdraws from UN race [Monday , October 02, 2006 -8.30 GMT]

Sri Lanka’s candidate for the post of UN Secretary-General Ambassador Jayantha Dhanapala withdrew his candidacy following the results of the third ‘straw poll’ by the members of the Security Council, Thursday September 28.

According to a Foreign Ministry release the Government in the interest of ensuring a consensus in electing an Asian candidate took the decision not to pursue the candidature of Dhanapala, a distinguished career diplomat and former international civil servant, for the post.

It is the hope of the Government of Sri Lanka that this action will facilitate the election of the emerging most favoured candidate.
