Sri Lanka’s second coal power plant to be in Sampur  [Tuesday , October 03, 2006 -9.30 GMT]

The Ministry of Power and Energy is to construct Sri Lanka’s second coal power plant in Sampur in the Trincomalee district as an answer to the country’s ever increasing demand for power and energy.

This plant will have a capacity of 1000 mega watt and the project targets an out flow of 500 mega watts by the year 2010 and the rest by 2012.

The project to cost an estimated US $ 500 million is funded by a loan scheme of Indian Government and construction of the plant will be carried out by the Indian Power and Energy Authority.

According the Information website troops are currently clearing the area of land mines and quotes military sources saying these operations can be wrapped up soon.
