Govt. agrees to peace talks, while retaining right to retaliate [Wednesday, October 04, 2006 - 10.00 GMT]

The Government has agreed to hold a round of peace talks with the LTTE. According to the Information Department the Government has agreed for unconditional talks while retaining the right to retaliate if the LTTE launches any attacks.

Norwegian peace facilitator Hansen Bauer and Norwegian Ambassador Hans Brattskar last evening met with the LTTE’s political wing leader Thamilselvam and others to try and restart the stalled peace talks between the government and the LTTE.

The Head of the Government’s peace negotiating team has said that the government was committed always to finding a peaceful solution.
