Navy destroys trawler believed to be carrying explosives and ammunition
[Monday, October 16, 2006- 10.45 GMT]

The Navy yesterday destroyed a trawler believed to be with about six tigers on board and carrying explosives and ammunition. Around 9 am yesterday the Navy had observed two trawlers traveling about 35 nautical miles west of Arippu.

The Media Centre for National Security (MCNS) reports that while one vessel was releases after inspection, the larger Indian built trawler flying a Sri Lankan flag appeared very suspicious and the Navy had therefore fired warning shots.

Instead of heeding the warning shots the trawler had fired back injuring three fishermen in the former trawler and compelling the Dvora to fire back resulting in the trawler exploding.

Speaking to a Colombo daily Military Spokesman Brigadier Prasad Samarasinghe said the security source suspected the destroyed vessel was transporting a large cache of arms since there were huge blasts from inside the vessel before it blew up. The trawler was heading towards the Silavathura area in Mannar, he said.

"The trawler was destroyed well within the Sri Lankan territorial waters close to the Indian maritime boundary," Brigadier Samarasinghe added.
