Suicide truck rams naval convoy; kills 67 unarmed Navy personnel and injures over 150
[Monday, October 16, 2006- 11.15 GMT]

67 unarmed Navy personnel were killed and over 150 injured today when a suicide truck rammed into a naval convoy at the Digampathana transit camp at 1.30 pm today, said a spokesperson from the Media Centre for National Security.

The victims were unarmed officers returning to duty while others were on their way home on leave. The transit camp is situated between Habarana and Dambulla.

Meanwhile a spokesman for the Presidential Secretariat said this was yet another example of the LTTE’s cowardly use of extreme violence against unarmed services personnel. The suicide truck attack at Habarana was in a civilian area away from the area of armed confrontation.

This was further proof of the LTTE’s unmitigated commitment to violence to achieve its ends and was in total disregard of international demands for it to abandon violence and seek peaceful means to achieve its goals.

It was significant that this attack took place as foreign envoys from Japan, the US and Norway were arriving here to discuss progress in the peace process and the upcoming talks in Geneva, the spokesman said.
