Colombo Mayor and city fathers join SLFP [Tuesday, October 17, 2006 - 11.45 GMT]

Twenty One members of the Colombo Municipal Council led by its Mayor Mr. Uvais M. Imitiyas and Deputy Mayor Mr. S. Rajendra joined the Sri Lanka Freedom Party today.  They obtained membership of the SLFP from its leader President Mahinda Rajapaksa, at Temple Trees.

The members, who had contested the elections to the CMC from an independent group, said the entire country accepts the leadership of the President, and they will extend their fullest cooperation to the President to strengthen his efforts to achieve peace.

This group of city councilors that joined the SLFP today, including 18 from the Tamil community, said they will extend all cooperation to the policies of the President to bring about peace in the country by defeating terrorism.

The councilors said they will follow the Mahinda Chintana and looked forward to guidance and assistance by the President to make Colombo the best city in Asia; they were prepared to make any sacrifice for the future good of the country.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa, who expressed his appreciation of the decision by the CMC members to support him, said his singular aim was to build a country where terrorism would be defeated and the Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims, Burghers, Malays and all communities could live together in peace. The President explained the need for a transformation in the CMC and the necessity to take steps to solve the problems of the shanty dwellers and others in the city that did not have basic amenities. While the Government was already taking steps to solve the housing problems of the people, it was also necessary for this to be done in Colombo, the President explained.

Among other areas of urgent activity required by members of the CMC identified by the President were the mosquito menace, poor storm water drainage and pollution of the environment. He explained that no room should be made for political pressure to result in unauthorized construction within the city. The President assured the councilors of all cooperation from him and the Government to make Colombo a clean and beautiful city.

Deputy Mayor Mr. S. Rajendra said that during the previous administration there had been much corruption and irregularities in managing the affairs of the CMC, and there had been much rash expenditure. He said they were determined to avoid this situation under the leadership and guidance of the President, and work towards making Colombo a developed and modern city.
