[Wednesday, October 18, 2006 - 3.30 GMT]

The Sri Lanka Navy's Dakshina Lanka Base at Galle came under attack by the LTTE around 7.40 a.m. today. The Navy countered  the attack supported by the Air Force.

The attackers had come by sea in three fishing craft that were hiding among other fishing craft at a position outside the Galle Harbour, where the Navy checks vessels.

Military Spokesman Brig. Prasad Samarasinghe said the Navy had attacked the armed LTTE vessels and one of them had been destroyed. The other two had entered the harbour area and were destroyed by Navy fire.

Two patrol craft of the Navy had been damaged.

There were no reports yet of casualties or other damage.
