Navy repels  LTTE attack at Galle Harbour

Police enforce curfew in the Galle town to conduct search operation

The Sri Lanka Navy's Dakshina Lanka Base at Galle came under attack by the LTTE around 7.40 a.m. today. The Navy countered  the attack supported by the Air Force.

The attackers are reported to have come by sea in three fishing craft that were among other fishing craft at a position outside the Galle Harbour, where the Navy checks vessels.

Military Spokesman Brig. Prasad Samarasinghe said the Navy had attacked the armed LTTE vessels and three of them had been destroyed by Navy fire. The other two had self detonated at the entrance to the harbour area. 

Two patrol craft of the Navy had been damaged in the encounter.

According to Karapitiya Teaching Hospital sources there were 14 injured admitted to the hospital  and one of them had died.  Three are reported to be in a serious condition.

Police have enforced curfew in the Galle town to conduct a search operation to flush out any terrorists hiding there. According to the Police the situation is completely under control.
