The two main political parties the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) and United National Party (UNO) signed a historic MOU today, a little after 12 noon, at Temple Trees. President Mahinda Rajapaksa and Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe were also present at the signing.

SLFP General Secretary Maithripala Sirisena and the UNP Chairman Malik Samarawickrema signed the MOU.

Addressing the gathering the President said that Sri Lanka had set an example to the whole of South Asia through the signing of the MOU. He said that this was not done for any particular party or for personal reason, but to help the country develop and achieve peace, where all citizens lived without fear.

“That would be our victory. That is why we signed the MOU”, the President said. He emphasized that a nation could march forward only by shedding petty political differences and by working in unity.

UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe said that the SLFP-UNP pact was an agreement for peace, stability and good governance. He said that today’s agreement was an occasion for everybody to rejoice. He thanked the President who made this MoU possible and the two delegations headed respectively by Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayke and UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya who arrived at the MoU after several rounds of discussion.

The signing took place amidst chanting of pirith by Buddhist monks. Hindu, Christian and Muslim priest too offered their prayers at the occasion.
