Samarasinghe said they had returned home under the protection of white flags. The fishermen had been unable to return home due to the changes in the security situation. The Brigadier said the fishermen had decided to try and return as they and their boats had faced increasing threats from the LTTE. He said they estimated that a further 110 were still likewise stranded. Elaborating on the surrender of LTTE cadres to the SLA, he said that in the last three days 27 cadres had surrendered, with most of them being under the age of 18. They had all been recruited forcibly.
Meanwhile the SLA has opened 14 welfare shops to enable civilians to purchase their essential goods at normal prices. The LTTE has prevented other shops from functioning, to show the international community that civilians were starving. The Military spokesman stressed that the welfare shops did not generate any profit for the SLA.
