Mavilaru, Mahindapura FDLs come under intense, continuous fire
[Wednesday, November 1, 2006 -10.00 GMT]

The Forward Defence Lines (FDL) and detachments at Maviaru and Mahindapura, Trincomalee have this morning, come under intense and continuous tiger mortar and artillery fire. The Security Forces have been forced to retaliate and neutralize the terrorist fire to continue with their routine defence work.

According to the Media Centre for National Security (MCNS) the LTTE had intensified their sporadic artillery and mortar fire at the FDLs and isolated detachments in the East just after the conclusion of the recent (October 28,29) Geneva talks.

Meanwhile the MCNS says that detachments at Mankerni and Kadjuwatte in the Batticaloa District bordering Trincomalee came under intense sporadic fire by the LTTE since last morning (31). A soldier injured during the shelling was rushed to hospital for treatment.

The MCNS quotes ground and intelligent sources in the area as saying the intension behind the sporadic indirect firing was to reduce the detachments and the FDLs and to launch subsequent attacks.

Further the ground sources are quoted as saying there are signs of tiger cadre build ups in the areas South of Mavilaru and North of Kadjuwatte.
