Rajmi Manatunga COLOMBO: The Postal Department has made special arrangements for delivering parcels to Jaffna enabling people in the South to send food items and other commodities. Post Master General Sherwin Senadheera told the Daily News that post offices island wide receive over 1,000 parcels containing essential items from people daily to be delivered to their relatives in Jaffna. "Parcels received by the Department are usually delivered through buses carrying mail. But owing to the large number of ration packs received in the last few days, we have arranged to transport these parcels from Colombo to Trincomalee by land following which they will be shipped to Jaffna," he said. According to Senadheera, two lorries carrying parcels of essential items left Colombo yesterday. The parcels which will be unloaded and stored in Trincomalee, will be shipped to Jaffna once the Security Forces receive the green light. He said they were also having discussions with the Railways Department on the possibility of allocating a separate wagon in trains operating on the Batticaloa-Trincomalee line to transport the parcels to Trincomalee. The Postal Department said the majority of parcels sent to Jaffna through the post contained sugar, milk powder, dhal and candles. However, parcels containing explosive materials or liquids, batteries and electric wires will not be accepted for delivery. "Due to security reasons, we request the public to bring the items to the post offices and pack them in front of the Post Master. We also ask them to refrain from sending perishable foods since it takes around two weeks for the parcels to reach Jaffna," he added. A large number of people were seen posting essential items to their relatives at several post offices in Colombo including Dehiwala, Mount Lavinia, Slave Island, Bambalapitiya and Wellawatte. Wellawatta post office said it receives 150-200 ration packs per day to be delivered to Jaffna to which land access has been cut off after the closure of the Colombo-Jaffna A9 highway.
