Govt. to reduce cost of living through special economic centers says Industrial Development Minister
[Friday, November 3, 2006 -9.00 GMT]

Industrial Development Minister Kumara Welgama stated that the government has tried to reduce the cost of living of the people through government institutions such as special economic centers, "Budget Shops" and Laksathosa including the decreasing of oil prices in the world market. The Minister further stated that presently a major reason for the high price of most consumer goods is that there is no direct connection between the manufacturer and the consumer, the intervention and earning of illegal profits by middlemen.

Minister expressed these ideas opening the new furniture showroom of the Moratumulla Carpentry Workshop Owners' Association in Moratuwa.

This showroom was opened at No.319, De Zoysa Road in Moratumulla, Moratuwa. The Association has made arrangements to sell products made by over 500 carpenters belonging to the association at 20% less than the market prices. The Association has also taken steps to give a three-year warranty to products sold by the showroom and also to keep the showroom open from 9.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. on all weekdays.
