Future of North and East should be decided through Referendum – PM
[Tuesday, November 7, 2006 - 9.00 GMT]

The future of the North and East- vis-à-vis the de-merger ruling- has to be determined by the people of the area through a Referendum said Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake, making a special statement in Parliament today.

Responding to a query raised by Parliamentarian Wimal Weerawansa the Prime Minister said the Government had tried to bring peace by working with the agreements of the Indo-Lanka Peace Accord, but due to LTTE violations it was difficult. He further said as a responsible Government they had to bow to the ruling of the Supreme Court.

Early last month the Supreme Court announced that the prevailing merger of the Northern and Eastern Provinces was ultra vires the Constitution, and not in accordance with the law.

The Prime Minister said it was up to the people there to decide if they want the North and East merged and not a political decision.
