LTTE mortar fire and artillery shelling on Kadjuwatta, Mankerni, Mavil aru and Mahindapura Army camps from un-cleared areas in Vakarai has intensified since this morning injuring five soldiers.

Military spokesman Brig. Prasad Samarasinghe told PRIU the troops had in the face of intensified attacks retaliated, after, through radar, precisely identifying LTTE targets. He said the there were no official figures of casualties yet, as the area was not under Government control.

Brig. Samarasinghe said the LTTE were using civilians as human shields. The Media Centre for National Security says around 30, 000 civilians have been forcibly detained by the LTTE to be used as human shields.
