Troops deny any intentional shelling on SLMM representatives [Thursday,
November 9, 2006 - 11.15 GMT]

The Media Centre for National Security (MCNS) reports Security Forces as strongly denying allegations of intentional shelling by Security Forces of the Punarin area in Jaffna whilst SLMM representatives were touring the area seeing to the feasibility of opening an alternative route to the A9 yesterday.

"The SLMM did not inform us they were going there", Brigadier Prasad Samarasinghe told PRIU today.

The MCNS describes Punarin as the hub of LTTE activities in the peninsula over the lagoon and sea and is kept under continuous observation by the troops. The LTTE August this year used the Punarin area to launch an attack on Security Forces in Mandathivu and Kilaly.

According to the MCNS troops in the front lines yesterday around 3.00 p.m reported an unusual gathering and movement in the tiger dominated areas in
Punarin at which point the field commanders had engaged the area with artillery to deter and prevent the launching of any offensives by the tigers.
