LTTE can still join democratic process - President
[Thursday, November 16, 2006 - 11.30 GMT]

The path is still open for the LTTE to lay down its arms and join the democratic process to achieve peace and development, said President Mahinda Rajapaksa today.

The President said this in the preamble to the Budget Speech presenting the Government's budget for 2007 in Parliament.

At the outset of the Budget Speech, President Rajapaksa explained that the LTTE had placed many obstacles in implementing the proposals presented in the Budget for 2006 by launching its campaign of violence shortly after he took office as President last year. He recalled the killing of over 70 persons at Kebitigollawa, suicide killer attacks, and the several attacks on unarmed security forces personnel among the LTTE's many acts of violence.

President Rajapaksa said that steps had been initiated to meet the just demands of the Tamil people. The hopes and expectations of the people had been raised by the two main political parties reaching understanding on the resolution of the key issues facing the country. He had enabled all democratic parties not come together in the search for solutions for the pressing problems in the country. He said the opportunity remained for all parties to join in this effort.
