Batticaloa, Mankerni civilians protest against LTTE
[Monday, November 21, 2006 - 9.30 GMT]

Tamil civilians in Batticaloa and Mankerni today protested against the LTTE and urged it to release the 30, 000 forcibly retained by it in un-cleared areas.

The Media Centre for National Security (MCNS) says this morning (21) over 1500 Tamil civilians in Batticaloa and over 1000 in Mankerni participated in the hartal campaign.

The MCNS further says over a period of one month the LTTE have increased their cadres for a planned major offensive on Security Forces, during which it has forced civilians to dig trenches and construct bunkers and abducting children to join their ranks.

From the beginning of November 1787 persons have found safety and protection in cleared areas and have been provided with humane treatment by Security
Forces.

The objective of today's hartal was to compel the LTTE to release the 30, 000 civilians being kept forcibly.
